PV Schools

Dear Putnam Valley Community:

As part of a new drinking water safety initiative, school districts across New York State are required to test water for PFOA and PFOS by the end of February 2021. The Putnam Valley School District is among the first to have completed these new testing protocols and has found levels of these emerging contaminants that exceed state standards at the Elementary School.  The source of these contaminants in our well water is not yet known for certain.  Research currently identifies some detergents and soaps and fire suppression forms commonly used in the past as potential sources for this contamination.  The water at the Middle School/ High School Campus is not part of this testing as their water comes from a municipal source.

The Elementary School’s water continues to be acceptable for all uses, including drinking. However, bottled drinking water will continue to be available throughout the building.  Putnam Valley is required to post the notice below and will be designing and installing a carbon filtration system to remove the contaminants from its well water. The school’s drinking fountains had been replaced by bottled water as part of our COVID safety protocols. We will continue to have bottled water for our students and staff until the filter is in place.

Please see more detailed information attached below.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeremy Luft
Superintendent of Schools
