Dear Putnam Valley Community Members:
Since last Sunday, we have been hearing of the terrible tragedy in Orlando, and trying to make meaning of the horror. Our children are affected by these events whether through watching a news story, hearing adult discussions, or viewing on-line videos or conversations. It is expected that young people will be scared and confused. These episodes find us in all different stages of grief and fear, particularly as we hear the stories of the individual victims and see them in their full humanity.
Because we are coming to the end of the school year, we don’t have full days with our students, but are aware of their needs and concerns. Our clinical support staff provide watchful help in identifying students who need more assistance. We are sensitive to student stress and anxiety and try to find ways to encourage and support them. I am sure you have found ways to reach out to your children in these times with additional hugs and messages of safety and comfort within your home.
If you are looking for resources to help you with conversations and guidance as we process disturbing and terrible events, we are attaching some websites that may provide some help:

We want you to know that our staff works diligently to provide a safe and healthy environment for all students. We are also fortunate to have Sheriff’s Deputy School Resource Officer Corrine Pitt and School Patrol Officer, George Turner on our campuses to further our sense of safety and security. Moreover, our school crisis and safety teams have learned how to address potential threats and respond when necessary.
Please feel free to contact our principals with questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Dr. Frances Wills
Superintendent of Schools
