PV Schools

Dear Putnam Valley Staff and Community:

It is anticipated that on Friday morning at a Special Board Meeting, the Board of Education will appoint Mr. Travis McCarty as Interim Assistant Principal at the Middle School until the end of the school year. Mr. McCarty has taught social studies in Putnam Valley since 2004. During the past three years, he was nominated by the District and then participated in the Future School Leaders Academy under the auspices of Bank Street College and Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES. He was recommended highly by his mentor in the program, Mr. John Chambers, and diligently served as an administrative intern in the District for two years.  Last year, in order to provide an opportunity for the District to benefit further from

Mr. McCarty’s skills and education, he was appointed as an Instructional Support Specialist to assist in curriculum and instructional assistance at the Middle School and in the District.  Mr. McCarty has collaborated in the implementation of all of the major District initiatives over the past three years, including professional development days, Achieve 3000 Reading, data analysis and benchmarking, authentic assessment, and learning management systems.  He has a deep understanding of the middle school program and recently attended the Middle Schools to Watch seminar with Mr. Hallisey to continue and renew the Middle School’s mission of excellence. Mr. McCarty organized the school wide effort that followed the workshop in order to assess the school’s adherence to the goals of the program and to develop strategies to further attain the mission of the Schools to Watch initiative.  As a teacher and coach, Mr. McCarty has demonstrated a commitment to students, as learners and as young people enjoying and exploring their world and preparing for their future.

Mr. McCarty will be taking a leave of absence from his social studies teaching position. We will immediately seek a qualified teacher for the remainder of the school year.  During the spring semester, the District will determine a course of action to establish the appointment of a permanent assistant principal at the Middle School.

Sincerely,

Dr. Frances Wills
Superintendent of Schools
