Dear Putnam Valley Community:
The Putnam Valley School District takes all issues related to the safety of the school community very seriously. We make every effort to communicate openly and frequently, while also protecting the privacy rights of each and every student.
We are reaching out regarding a disciplinary matter that took place yesterday to ensure that accurate information is shared with the community. Yesterday, our high school administration was notified that a student was in possession of a small keychain knife (total open length 1.5”). The school has not received any reports from staff or students that anyone was threatened or that the knife was used in any menacing way, only that a student was in possession of a keychain knife. The keychain knife was confiscated and administration is taking action in a manner consistent with the District’s Code of Conduct.
We have built a culture of trust amongst our students that cannot be undervalued. Students are always encouraged and supported to go to an adult with information. We are committed to supporting the social, emotional, and physical safety of our students.
If you have heard anything inconsistent with this communication, I hope this helps to address any concerns.
Thank you.
Dr. Jeremy Luft
Superintendent of Schools
