Putnam Valley Elementary School

Dear PVES Families,

Happy October! The school year began with a busy and productive month of September at PVES, and this next month looks to be another full one! Thank you for supporting your children with positive words and consistent homework, reading, and sleep schedules each day. Reading and homework should now be assigned regularly, and we work together to set our students up for success!

There are a few calendar points to note carefully. This week, schools will be closed on Wednesday, October 5th, in observance of Yom Kippur. On Friday, October 7th, all schools will dismiss 15 minutes early as part of a mandatory Emergency Evacuation Drill. (Please be sure to be at your child’s bus stop, or parent pick-up, 15 minutes early on Friday.)  There will be no school on Monday, October 10th, in observance of Columbus Day.

We also have a couple of calendar changes for the month of November, due to our Elementary Parent/Teacher Conference Schedule. Our elementary students only will now dismiss at 12:00 on Tuesday, November 22nd, and on Wednesday, November 23rd. (This will allow for teachers to offer late afternoon and evening conferences for parents on certain dates, along with daytime conferences on Tuesday, November 8th, Election Day.) All Parent/Teacher Conference dates/times are posted on our Calendar Scroll, and your child’s teachers will be reaching out to you with conference sign-up sheets soon. Thank you for making note of these half-days for students on November 22nd and 23rd. (Thanksgiving break will take place on November 24th and 25th).

Thank you for making certain that all your child’s belongings are labeled with at least a last name on a label or on an inside tag. We are often trying to return lunch boxes, water bottles, clothing items, hats, and backpacks to students. Thank you for checking to make sure that everything is labeled. Thank you also for supporting our policy that toys and electronics should stay at home or stored inside the child’s backpack during the school day.

All staff and students will be invited to bring a costume to wear on Monday, October 31st for our student-centered Halloween Parade. We ask that children do not wear scary masks or carry toy weapons that may accompany some costumes. Thank you!

Please mark your calendars for the PVEF Color Run on Sunday, October 16th. This is always a wonderful community event!

Enjoy the week ahead.

Sincerely,

Dr. Margaret Podesta
