Putnam Valley Elementary School

Dear PVES Families,

We have had a great start to the new year at PVES, and we are ready for our first full week of January! Thank you for having your children in attendance and so prepared for school this past week. January is a time of great learning and achievement in the school year, and our teachers will be assessing the students as they prepare for Report Cards to be completed by the end of this month. Thank you for your support at home with homework routines and responsibilities, daily reading, and early bedtimes. We aim to thrive in 2025!

Congratulations to Mrs. Erin Fazzino, our Achieve (gr. 3 & 4) teacher, who gave birth to her first child this past week, a beautiful baby girl named Mia Lynn! Best wishes to Mrs. Fazzino and her husband at this very special time. We now welcome Miss Melissa Clements to the Achieve classroom. Miss Clements, a certified special education teacher and an experienced PVES staff member, will be covering for Mrs. Fazzino throughout the rest of this school year. Our students are in great hands!

It is time to begin collecting information for our upcoming Kindergarten Registration dates. If you have a child who will be 5 years old by December 1, 2025, please call our main office at 845-528-8092 so that you will be included in our Kindergarten Registration mailings and communications. Registration appointments will begin in February, and Kindergarten Screening dates are scheduled for May. Please share this information with friends and neighbors in our district who have children who will be 5 years old by December. We look forward to meeting our newest group of learners!

Our PTA will be hosting a “Family Fun Day” on Saturday, January 18th, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM at PVES. Please see the PTA flyer for more details. This sounds like a great time!

There will be no school on Monday, January 20th, in honor of Martin Luther King Day. Schools will also be closed on Wednesday, January 29th, in honor of the Lunar New Year. Please mark your calendars! It is also important to be prepared with back-up plans for your children if schools must close early, start late, or be closed due to inclement weather. The winter weather is here, and it looks like a cold week ahead.

Our PVCSD Capital Projects Vote will be held on Tuesday, January 28th, in the PVES Cafeteria. Please be sure to attend informational meetings and read information about the details of this district vote, and reach out to our district office if you have any questions. Thank you for voting!

Our school calendar scroll has been updated on the Elementary website at www.pvcsd.org to include updated NYS spring testing dates for students in grades 3 and 4. Please also note that our Grade 4 Winter Concert is scheduled for Wednesday, January 22nd, at 7:00 PM, with more information being sent to our fourth-grade families this week. Our Grade 3 Recorder Concert will take place on the evening of Wednesday, April 9th.

We look forward to welcoming our parents of students in Grades K, 1, and 2 to our ELA Night on Thursday, January 30th, at 6:30 PM. We hope you can join us for this informational/curriculum evening. More details will be coming your way soon!

Our Character Education themes for this month are “Self-Control and Being Safe.” Classroom teachers will be sharing a read-aloud book based on this theme with students, and Mrs. Robey and I will hold our monthly Community Meetings with each grade level to promote these important concepts. At home, this month is all about games and self-control! We challenge you and your family to play various games together. Games help to teach children self-control and strategic thinking, along with cooperation, patience, and sportsmanship. Students can share what games they played with the class! Some examples of games are: Jenga, UNO, Memory Game, Go Fish, board games, Simon Says, and Red Light/Green Light! Have fun, and thank you for supporting our Character Education initiatives.

Please be sure that your children have warm jackets and hats for outdoor recess each day. On most days, the children play outside for about 25 minutes, for a little fresh air and exercise. All clothing items should be labeled on the inside tags in case they are misplaced. Thank you!

Have a great week ahead! January is off to a great start!

Sincerely,
Dr. Margaret Podesta
Principal
