Dear PVHS Families,
This is a very difficult time for our community, state, and nation. As educators, we are very concerned about our students and their well-being during this crisis. The school closure has been a heartbreaking situation for everyone, but especially our senior class of 2020. While we are unsure what May and June will look like in terms of the school calendar, this is not the way that anyone wants seniors to end their high school careers. Our 2020 advisors, Ms. Getman and Ms. Rossano had the idea to have each senior family decorate their front door to celebrate their graduate! As you drive through Putnam Valley, please be on the lookout for the amazing decorations that highlight our 12th-grade students and give a honk of support!
We are also very disappointed to announce that our school musical, Young Frankenstein will not take place this spring. The entire cast and crew led by our student assistant directors, Gianna Patino and Emma Mignano worked tirelessly to make the play a reality. However, the current situation makes it impossible to move forward with this year’s production. Dr. Micera will be working with staff and students to brainstorm creative ways students can showcase their hard work.
Last month we were so ecstatic to celebrate our first Sectional Championship in Girls Basketball. We are all saddened that the team did not get to finish their state-run and our spring athletic season was lost before it started. We are very proud of all of our dedicated athletes and look forward to the opportunity to compete once again on the athletic field. Our spring coaches have set up encouraging distance work out plans and communications. Virtual workouts, skill development, and social media posts, like our softball player profiles, have kept our student’s spirits lifted.
The 3rd quarter-end date remains Friday, April 17th. A majority of grades for this quarter (6 weeks) are from when students were present in school and therefore, those grades will hold the greatest weight for determining a 3rd quarter grade for students. However, work assigned the past two weeks during the school closure will be included in the final 3rd quarter grade.
We want to keep all students connected to the school. Our office and teaching assistants have been contacting parents of students that we have not heard from in the past two weeks. If you feel your child is struggling during this closure please do not hesitate to reach out to one of our counselors so that we can work with you to support your child.
Last week we sent important testing information in regards to International Baccalaureate and AP exams. If you have any questions about those tests, please contact Mr. Mello. Students enrolled in college-level courses (ex: DCC, SUNY, etc.) will be expected to continue work on those classes and receive grades in order to receive college credit. Regents exams are still a requirement by NYS for graduation and a Regents diploma. Should we receive more guidance from NYS regarding grading and Regents exams, we will communicate that as promptly as possible. Final exams for individual classes have yet to be determined. As time progresses, we will share more information about our plans with respect to final exams. The 4th marking period will begin via distance learning on Monday, April 20th. Teachers will assign work and provide feedback as necessary. Once we get closer to that date, we will send out updated information.
