Dear PVES Families,

I hope that you are all having a good week and that you are getting ready for a snowy weekend.  Please be safe in any travels this weekend, and please be sure to listen for any possible schedule interruptions tomorrow morning.  Winter has certainly arrived.

This week, our elementary school practiced a mandated Sheltering Drill, for safety protocol practice in the event of severe weather events.  As always, our students participated with true attention and respect, and the children were reassured that we are safe in our school.  I thank our staff and our Safety Patrol Officer for helping us to practice these important drills with great attention to detail.

Schools will be closed on Monday, January 21st, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Our students have been learning about Dr. King and the significance of his famous “I Have a Dream” speech in their classrooms.  Schools will reopen on Tuesday, January 22nd.

As we approach the midpoint of the school year, I would like to remind all families of the importance of our students’ homework and reading routines.  Homework is given to provide independent practice to support the learning going on in the classrooms.  As homework is reviewed and checked in the classrooms, students are able to check their own understanding, and new concepts are reinforced.  Although no elementary homework assignments should go beyond the time that your child’s teacher has stated, the importance of routine and practice cannot be overstated.  Thank you for supporting your child’s wonderful work and learning habits.  The foundations we are setting here will benefit your young learner for years to come.

Please remind your neighbors and friends to call to register their children for Kindergarten Registration at 845-528-8092.  All new registrants must be 5 years of age by December 1, 2019.  We look forward to meeting our newest students at the Kindergarten Screening in May.

Report Cards will be available at the end of next week.  If you have any questions about your child’s progress, please contact the classroom teacher directly.  Thank you for your positive support.

Stay warm this weekend.  January is National Book Month!  Keep reading together!
